Description
Abstract
Over the past decade, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in language learning and teaching has become increasingly widespread. Empirical research on AI technologies in this context has predominantly focused on how these digital tools can enhance the language learning process by improving efficiency, enhancing personalization, and promoting interaction in the target language. However, far less attention has been placed on the ethical issues surrounding the use of AI and how these concerns might negatively affect language learning and teaching. Considering this, the aim of this chapter is to synthesize AI-assisted language learning literature and highlight key ethical issues that have been identified in this body of research. Specifically, the author discusses three popular AI technologies–automatic speech recognition, machine translation, and generative AI–and reviews ethical concerns such as academic integrity, bias, and reliability in the use of these tools. To conclude the chapter, the author introduces practical strategies to mitigate ethical concerns related to AI to create more critical and equitable language learning and teaching environments.
