Abstract
Collaborative writing for second/foreign language development is receiving increasing attention from researchers, educators, and language teachers. However, the research to date has not always been easy to understand, especially for early-career teachers, and as a result, the research findings have not been fully utilized in the classroom. Therefore, this chapter aimed to briefly introduce representative research on collaborative writing, the educational implications of collaborative writing, as well as instructional approaches that can be effective in the classroom. This chapter first describes the theoretical frameworks of research on collaborative writing. It then summarizes previous studies in terms of the factors that influence the nature of collaborative writing and its outcomes. It concludes with specific suggestions regarding task selection and pair/group formation and examples of research topics that can be implemented in the classroom.
