Abstract
This chapter examines the teaching of writing in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and English for Academic Purposes (EAP). Teaching in these settings focuses on identification of learners’ needs in relation to genres of writing and linguistic features of the register targeted by the learners. The chapter discusses literature on needs analysis, studies of genre- and corpus-based writing instruction in ESP and EAP and literature documenting the kind of in-house writing materials produced by teachers in this area. The chapter identifies topics for ESP/EAP teacher education and suggests a case study activity that could be used by novice or experienced ESP/EAP teachers or on an MTESOL programme.
